Local Area Description
Stoke Newington is an area in London's Hackney Borough and is around 4 miles north north-east of the capital's centre. The centre of the area is based around Church Street and it still has a feeling of the original hamlet the area grew up from. Houses are highly varied and there are numerous Victorian and Edwardian properties.
Stoke Newington is well-known for having a generous amount of open space, including for example the West Reservoir, and the architecturally bizarre Castle Climbing Centre, which used to be a waterboard pumping centre. Landmarks include the Grade I listed St Matthias Church in Wordsworth Road, Abney Park Chapel and Clissold House.
